How often should you change your mattress? That’s a question I hear a lot from customers trying to figure out when is the best time to buy a new mattress. Although there isn’t one specific answer to this question, there are a few common indicators to watch out for.
1. Your Favorite Show Just had a Reunion Special
This is probably a good sign it’s time to think about changing your mattress. Some mattresses have a lifespan of around 10 years. So, if you’re watching the reunion special of your favorite show on the same mattress that you had when the show started, well, it’s probably a good idea to think about getting a new mattress.
2. The Innersprings are Now Outersprings
Innersprings have their name for a specific reason—they’re supposed to be inside the mattress. If your springs are starting to break and pierce through the top layer of your mattress, it’s time to start shopping. And if you’ve been sleeping on an innerspring mattress for a long time, you’ll be excited to know that sleep technology has advanced a lot since you last purchased a mattress. More on that later.
3. Your Dog Doesn’t Even Want to Sleep on the Bed
Dogs have the innate ability to fall asleep pretty much anywhere. Heck, it’s a trait that I’m pretty jealous of! But, if you notice that your favorite pooch is no longer bellying up to the bed, then it might be time to change your mattress!
4. You Didn’t Invest in a Mattress Protector
Have you ever noticed how dust seems to have this superpower to find every single crevasse and shelf in your house and just hang out and accumulate? Eww… Your mattress is defenseless against the superpower of dust if you don’t have a mattress protector. And we’re not just talking about dust that can get into your mattress—spills, flaky skin and bed bugs can also find their way into your mattress if it’s not protected.
Think of your mattress not as just a place to sleep, but as an investment in your health. Just like any other investment, you want to make sure you have proper protection. And a mattress protector gives you that protection and a little peace of mind.
5. Can’t Sleep Through the Night
Do you find yourself waking up in the middle of the night or feeling really uncomfortable while sleeping? This could be your mattress trying to tell you something. “It’s been a good run, but it’s time for a new mattress.”
The stability and comfort level of a mattress can depreciate over time, so if your mattress is around that 10-year mark, it’s probably time to start thinking about a new mattress.
6. You Need a Search Party to Find Your Partner in the Morning
Do you ever wake up in the morning and have to look around your bed for your partner? You remember they fell asleep in their favorite spot on the mattress but now all you see is a heap of blankets and a small tuft of hair poking out. That comfortable spot that they’ve had for years has caused the mattress to sag and created a pit. After you send out a search party for your partner, you might want to start searching for a new mattress.
7. There’s a Symphony of Snoring in Your Bedroom
I just love the full sounds of a symphony orchestra. I do not enjoy the sounds of snoring. If you’ve noticed that your partner has started to snore or even that you’ve started to snore, you might want to try an adjustable base bed. Finding a mattress with an adjustable base that allows you to elevate your head can help with snoring. My Power Bob Elite and Power Bob Ultra Adjustable Base Beds feature an anti-store position.
It’s also important to select the correct mattress to go with your adjustable base bed. Years ago many of the mattresses in the market were not built for adjustable base beds because they didn’t have the proper flexibility, but a lot has changed. I recommend memory foam mattresses for adjustable base beds because of the flexibility. The memory foam mattresses can bend with the adjustable base bed as it moves.

8. Your Warranty Has Expired
A quality mattress can last up to 15 years and sometimes even more, so the warranty should match the expected lifespan. If you’ve only had your mattress for a few years and the warranty has already expired, that could be an indicator of a poor quality mattress.
I’m proud to offer industry-leading warranties on my mattresses, some even up to 20 years. That’s right, a 20-year warranty on a mattress! That’s twice as many years as some of my competitors.
9. An Analog Mattress in a Digital World
If you were watching movies on VHS when you purchased your last mattress, then it’s probably time for a new one. Mattress technology continues to evolve over the years, and probably the coolest innovation I’ve seen in a long time is phase change material. Called PCM for short, it’s really just a fancy way of saying that some of my mattresses have a cool-to-the-touch cover. You can literally feel the difference when you touch the top of a mattress that has a cover with PCM.
Stop by your nearest store and test out my Bob-O-Pedic Sky mattress, just one of my mattresses with PCM.
10. The Seams are Tearing Apart
Keep an eye on the stitching of your mattress, especially around the seams. Seams that are starting to tear apart will compromise the integrity of your mattress. This also allows another entry point for dust and spills into your mattress.
11. Your Sleep Style Changed
Have you changed from a side sleeper when you purchased your current mattress to more of a stomach sleeper? Or maybe you find yourself spending more time on your back. The position in which you sleep can play a major factor in determining what type of mattress you should purchase, because each position has different needs. Here’s a breakdown of the best mattresses for side sleepers, stomach sleepers and back sleepers.
The Best Mattresses for Side Sleepers
Side sleepers need a mattress that contours to the body while also keeping the spine aligned. Look for a mattress that provides proper alignment with your spine, neck and head. This will help to minimize side and back pain. This is why I recommend a plush mattress as the best mattress for side sleepers.
Check out my top suggestions for best mattresses for side sleepers:
Bob-O-Pedic Hybrid Radiance Plush
My Bob-O-Pedic Hybrid Radiance Plush offers the perfect blend of support and comfort. The foam encased individually wrapped coil system provides the support you need while the quilted knit cover with cooling technology provides a peaceful sleeping environment. Layers of gel-infused convoluted comfort foam and Bob-O-Pedic Memory Foam work together to aid in temperature regulation and pressure relief.
Bob-O-Pedic Twilight Plush
If you’re a side sleeper that enjoys a thick mattress, then my Bob-O-Pedic Twilight Plush mattress is for you! This beauty of a mattress features 16” of supportive and comfortable foam and also includes a micro coil for extra conformance. The Twilight also includes a stretch knit cover with innovative phase change material (PCM) threads. This material absorbs excess body heat and then releases it again to the body when needed.
Bob-O-Pedic Prize Hybrid
My Bob-O-Pedic Prize Hybrid mattress pairs Bob-O-Pedic Gel Memory Foam with charcoal for temperature regulation, odor control and pressure relief. This comfy mattress also has an individually wrapped coil system for support and ships as a mattress-in-a-box. Did I ever tell you how fun it is to set up my mattress-in-a-box mattresses? The Best Mattresses for Back Sleepers
If you are a back sleeper, you need a mattress on the firmer side to provide the proper support for your back. While shopping for mattresses, look for one that helps create proper alignment with your back, neck and head while you’re laying down. I invite you to stop by your nearest Bob’s Discount Furniture location to take a test nap at my Sleep Center and test out any mattress.
Bob-O-Pedic Hybrid Radiance Cushion Firm
The Bob-O-Pedic Hybrid Radiance Firm features a quilted knit cover for comfort and a foam encased, individually wrapped coil system for conformance and support. This hybrid and memory foam mattress also contains layers of gel-infused convoluted comfort foam and Bob-O-Pedic Gel Memory Foam.
Bob-O-Pedic Distinction Firm
My Bob-O-Pedic Hybrid Distinction mattress is packed with layers of support and comfort. Multiple layers of foam provide ultimate comfort, while my world-famous Bob-O-Pedic Gel Memory Foam aides with temperature regulation. Plus, this mattress includes gel-infused latex for even more comfort, support and resiliency. An edge-to-edge individually wrapped coil system offers superior support for your hips, back and shoulders.
Bob-O-Pedic Signature Gel Plush
My Bob-O-Pedic Signature Plush mattress is loaded with great features, including temperature regulation, odor control and pressure relief. Plus, the layers of Bob-O-Pedic Gel Memory Foam and Bob-O-Pedic Quick Response Memory Foam are topped with a cooling cover to keep you cool and comfortable throughout the night.
The Best Mattresses for Stomach Sleepers
Stomach sleepers need a mattress that prevents sinking. I recommend a comfy Bob-O-Pedic Memory Foam mattress in the middle of the firmness scale. You don’t want an extra firm mattress because you want a little give, but you also don’t want a super plush mattress because you could sink into the mattress.
Bob-O-Pedic Twilight Firm
My Bob-O-Pedic Twilight Firm mattress features 16″ of supportive and comfortable foam plus a micro coil for added conformance and comfort. To top it all off, my Bob-O-Pedic Twilight has a stretch knit cover with innovative phase change material (PCM) threads. This technology absorbs excess body heat when too much is created and releases it again to the body when needed.
Bob-O-Pedic Prize Gel
My Bob-O-Pedic Prize Gel mattress has Bob-O-Pedic Gel Memory Foam with charcoal for temperature regulation, odor control and pressure relief. The Prize also includes a layer of transition foam for conformance and support, AND comes in a box! Can you imagine all these benefits for one affordable price?!
Bob-O-Pedic Sport Hybrid Firm
My Bob-O-Pedic Sport Hybrid mattress is the perfect blend of sturdy support and contouring comfort! Plus, an individually wrapped coil system provides support.
