Rug Refresh: The Latest Trends in Floor Decor!

You spend time thinking about what to hang on your walls, so why not get creative with your floors? My favorite way to make that happen is with area rugs! This floor decor has the power to add warmth, texture, and color to every room of the home. When it comes down to it, you can never go wrong with your personal style—but you seem like the trendy type, so I thought I’d fill you in on the hottest area rug trends. I promise, they’re a lot more affordable than the hottest handbag trends.

Natural materials

Relaxation is in, and nothing feels more calming than the great outdoors. Bring elements of Mother Nature inside with rugs made from natural fibers (aka, ones that come from plants or animals, like cotton, jute, and wool). Often woven, these highly durable rugs add interesting elements of texture, and their neutral colors make them easy to match any decor you already have. So, if you buy a different colored couch in a few years, your rug can stay. And, when you are ready to get rid of your rug, these eco-friendly options are recyclable!

My favorite way to style this trend: Layer these up. Once you’ve landed on your neutral-colored, textured rug, you can place a smaller rug on top in a design you love (try a bold print or an irregular shape for a fun contrast, like a cowhide rug). This will add depth, shape, and color to your space, without going overboard.

Earth colors

Earthy materials in an Earthy color are an organic pairing you’ve gotta try! Ya know how plants create calming energy within your home? It’s the same idea with Earth tones. These neutral hues get their name from—you guessed it—the natural world around us: the soil, sky, clouds, and sun. You can use muted greens, like sage and olive, to reflect that peaceful plant feeling, plus they pair nicely with wood tones and white furniture. Or, you could go for soft browns, like terracotta and walnut, which create a sense of warmth and coziness and pair perfectly with rustic or bohemian-inspired furniture. For more color ideas, try a creamy beige, turmeric yellow, or warm gray. Color affects our mood, and these Earth tones are sure to give you a sense of relaxation—It’s no wonder people are loving this Zen trend with area rugs!

My favorite way to style this trend: Decorate with the seasons! You swap out your holiday decor, so why not swap your rugs, too? Try a dusty rose entryway rug in the summer, burnt orange in the autumn, an icy gray in the winter, and moss green in the spring.

Antique aesthetic

Out with the old, in with the new? Not with this trend! Distressed vintage-style rugs are taking the spotlight, thanks to their timeless design. They offer an antique aesthetic that can work with a variety of home styles, from traditional to modern. With their eye-catching patterns, these rugs also give the look of texture without actually being textured, so you’ll get an interesting design and all the softness you need. And for all you history buffs, their intricate patterns and motifs tell stories of the past—It’s like having a piece of artwork on your floor!

Now, this doesn’t mean you have to go to a flea market and lug home an old, frayed antique rug. I have high-quality options that reflect this popular old-world design. Best of all, you’ll get the aesthetic of a high-end rug, without the hefty price tag. It’s history, beauty, and value all in one! What’s not to love?

My favorite way to style this trend: Add eclectic decor to complement this trend. You can pair your vintage rug with a bold-colored couch, like my mid-century modern Bettie seating. Complete the room with a brass coffee table and funky light, and create a space that feels uniquely you.

Minimalist prints

So maybe you’re not the solid color-lovin’ type, or perhaps you like something more modern than vintage prints. If that’s the case, then you’ll love this next trend of minimalist rugs. They still stick to the whole “Zen vibes” motif, just punched up a bit. From animal prints to simple geometric shapes, you can add personality and fun while keeping a neutral color palette. Whereas a vibrant pattern might overpower a room, minimalist rugs add just the right amount of flair (especially small spaces) without stealing the attention from your colorful artwork or glam bedroom set. And with their simple patterns, dust and grime won’t get hidden in the depths of these rugs, so you can stay on top of your cleaning game. By eliminating clutter and simplifying your rug, your minimalist space will be ready for relaxation.

My favorite way to style this trend: Throw one in your kid’s bedroom! Although you may not think “minimalist” when it comes to styling kids’ rooms, a simple patterned rug is actually a creative means to add playfulness in a way that doesn’t scream, “this is a chaotic kids’ room!”

I hope this rug-spiration helps you with your latest area rug shopping. Now go off and revamp your room!

I consider myself the luckiest spokespuppet ever because I get to talk about the thing I love the most everyday – furniture! Tufted headboards, rustic finishes, the difference between a sofa and a couch (yes, there is a difference)… I could go on and on. Oh, I just love furniture and I’m SO excited that I have this blog to share my passion with you! It may take me a little longer to create posts – have you ever tried typing with clay hands – but I look forward to talking furniture with you!
