Bob’s and the Bruins Bring Hope to Homeless and At-Risk Youth

Bob’s Discount Furniture teamed up with the Boston Bruins to help Emma and Mohammad furnish their first apartments.

Both young adults are supported by the Boston-based nonprofit Bridge Over Troubles Waters, which helps at-risk and homeless youths.

“Everyone deserves to turn the place they live into the home that they love,” said Lindsay Ruszczyk, Bob’s Communications, Community Outreach, & PR Director. “We are honored to team up with the Bruins to help Mohammad and Emma furnish their new apartments and set a course for great future outcomes.”

With the help of Blades, the Bruins’ mascot, Mohammad and Emma were paired with Bob’s store managers to select the perfect pieces for their new spaces.

“I came here to get some furniture today,” explained Mohammad. “I moved into a new place [and I am] trying to make everything look beautiful.”

Selecting Bob’s popular Playday sofa, a desk for gaming, and some striking art, Mohammad was focused on the essentials for his new space. When he’s not at home, he’s studying computer science in college and working at Bob’s Italian as a prep cook.

“Bridge is definitely a big part of my life,” said Mohammad. “They helped out a lot and changed my perspective on a lot of things.”

For over 50 years, Bridge Over Troubled Waters has been a gateway to tens of thousands of homeless youths, enabling them to achieve a healthy and productive adulthood through prevention, intervention, and pathways to independence.

“They are going all the way from homeless to self-sufficiency,” said Roseann Hogan, Annual Events and Giving Manager for Bridge Over Troubled Waters. “It’s their first apartment. One of the youth was sleeping on an air mattress before this began.”

Emma was eager to shop for a few key items for her apartment, including a new bedroom set, a sofa, a dining table, and a full-length mirror, which was a must-have.

“It means a lot because I can actually relax in my home. Lately, I couldn’t do that. I always wanted to leave my house,” shared Emma. “So now I can say I finally picked out what I want.”

Boston Bruins’ alumni, Ken Hodge, Jr., joined the delivery team to help bring Emma’s new Bob’s furniture home. Together they tried out her new sofa. “Thank you,” she said, “for helping me make my home complete.”
