A Banner Year for Special Olympics and Bob’s

Bob’s Discount Furniture is thrilled to share that through the generous donations of our guests and a match from Bob’s, $38,600 was donated to Special Olympics chapters across America.

Funds were collected in Bob’s stores coast-to-coast from January through March, 2024.

“We’re honored to donate to Special Olympics through our Café Collections for a Cause program,” said Lindsay Ruszczyk, Director of Communications and Community Outreach. “We are grateful to every guest who contributed to this campaign, allowing us to support the communities where we do business.”

Athletes from Special Olympics Maine accepted the donation on behalf of all Special Olympics chapters. The Donation was presented by Bob’s Discount Furniture employees from Scarborough, Maine during the Oh My Bob! Disc Golf Tournament, which benefited Special Olympics Maine.

“Bob’s Discount Furniture through the Café Collections for a Cause program is a
partner Special Olympics can count on. This program not only raises critical
funds for Special Olympics Programs across the country, but it also shares the message of inclusion with Bob’s customers every day in every store,” said Mary Beth McMahon, President & CEO of Special Olympics. “We are so thankful that our athletes continue to benefit from this incredible collaboration, focused on inclusion through sports, events, and employment opportunities for people with
intellectual disabilities.”

Since 2014, Bob’s has supported Special Olympics through financial giving, surpassing  $500,000 in donations to the organization. In addition to fundraising, Bob’s employees have volunteered at Special Olympics games and have participated in Polar Plunge events.

As part of the longstanding relationship between the organizations, Special Olympics athletes visit Bob’s stores to educate employees about volunteering and events like the Polar Plunge.

Bob’s store manager Maurice Mckisset was inspired by Special Olympics DC athlete, Lindsey Wilkes, who visited a Bob’s store in February. Hand-in-hand, Maurice and Lindsey plunged into frigid waters to raise funds for Special Olympics.

“Participating in the plunge and fundraising was an amazing experience for the Bob’s team,” said Maurice. “Creating a friendship with Lindsey is the gift that keeps on giving.”

To mark 10 years of partnership between Bob’s and Special Olympics, employees participated in Polar Plunge events in Maryland, District of Columbia, Minnesota, and Michigan raising more than $15,000 for local Special Olympics chapters in addition to the Café Collections for a Cause fundraising.
