Your furniture says a lot about your personal style and aesthetic and take it from an expert, there are a TON of design looks and trends to choose from! Rustic, Traditional, Industrial, even Jacobian, (if you want the details of this 17th century trend let me know and I’ll gladly elaborate). But what do they all mean? They’re just words, right? How do you know what that “word” LOOKS like–how does it manifest itself when it comes to furniture? Well, because I’m only one spokespuppet with a lot on my plate, let me just tackle one style at a time here. Today we’re talking Contemporary!
One defining feature of contemporary furniture–clean lines! I know, I know. You’re saying, “but Bob, I thought you said clean lines were Mid-Century Modern? That’s true, I did, but this is a trait that both styles share.
Clean lines aren’t the only characteristics these two styles have in common! Both Mid-Century Modern and Contemporary styles are grounded in neutral tones with minimal decor.
So how does Contemporary differ? Oftentimes, it’s with smooth, rounded corners like you’ll find in my Cosmopolitan sectional. Just enough of a difference to make this style really stand out on it’s own.
The little details that really make Contemporary pieces unique are thin, simple hardware. Usually in either black, or nickel finish like on my Cosmopolitan server. In fact, any type of reflective surface or shine can add an extra ounce of understated luxury!
Emphasize your Contemporary style with two MAJOR design choices–open floor plans and large windows, but skip the curtains and drapes. Just like the clean lines and smooth corners, this will give your space a true fluid feel.
There you have it, folks! Now you’ll be able to impress all your friends with your extraordinary furniture knowledge at your next swanky party. Send me an invitation or share your own pictures showcasing your Contemporary style @mybobs
