How do You Futon? Making Convertible Sofas Work for You

I love futons because they’re such a versatile piece of furniture. Your futon can serve as a couch or sofa during the day for extra seating, a recliner at night while you catch up on a good book and then a bed for a little shut-eye. The best part about the futon is that it’s easy to change from one position to another, and it only takes a few seconds. How you use your futon is only limited by your imagination. I’m going to give you a few suggestions below on how to use a futon.

Questions to Ask Yourself Before Buying a Futon

So now that I got you all excited about futons, let’s look at a few questions to ask yourself before you purchase a futon.

Do I have Enough Space for my Futon?

Because futons have the ability to change positions, this will require extra clearance compared to a regular sofa. You need to leave room for the futon to open up to a full bed. If you’re going to put your futon against a wall, make sure you have room around the sides and in front to slide it out so you can open it up. Heck, what fun is it to have a futon if you can’t use the different positions?!

What are the Main Uses of my Futon?

If you plan on using the bed a lot, make sure you find a futon that’s comfortable to sleep on. I suggest finding a futon with super comfy Bob-O-Pedic Memory Foam! Do you plan on using your futon mainly as a sofa? Then you can arrange it up against a wall.

Will Children use the Futon?

If you have children, you’ll want to find a futon that is durable and also has a fabric that is easy to clean.

What are the different Futon positions?

Futon positions may vary by brand and style, but all of my futons have three positions: sofa, recliner and bed. I love the ability to instantly change the position of my futon!

The Best Rooms for a Futon

Because futons are such a fun and functional piece of furniture, they can work well in almost every room in your house. Here are a few suggestions of great rooms for a futon:

Dorm Room

It’s that time of year again when students are heading back to college. A futon is ideal for dorm rooms because it serves many functions and is college student budget-friendly!

Family Room

The family room is the definition of a multipurpose space. It’s where you watch TV, play games, catch up with family and friends and nap. The versatility of the futon makes it a great fit for the family room.

Vacation Home

You always need to be prepared for that extra guest who shows up at your vacation home. While you may not have a spare bedroom, a futon gives the option to have extra sleeping space at night when needed.

Playroom

Children are constantly in discovery mode, whether that’s through playing or reading. A futon gives you and your child a nice comfy spot to read a book. Then once those yawns start to appear, you have an instant nap space. And what parent doesn’t love naptime!

Man Cave

Yogi Berra’s famous quote, “It ain’t over till it’s over,” perfectly applies to the man cave. When the big game is on, it’s not over till the final buzzer or the winning run has scored—even if it’s a school night. So there may be some late nights when friends gather to watch the big game and having that extra sleeping space for people to crash comes in handy!

Extra Bedroom

A futon works well in an extra bedroom because it provides extra seating space when you don’t have guests and provides you a space to get away and catch up on your favorite shows

Bob

I consider myself the luckiest spokespuppet ever because I get to talk about the thing I love the most everyday – furniture! Tufted headboards, rustic finishes, the difference between a sofa and a couch (yes, there is a difference)… I could go on and on. Oh, I just love furniture and I’m SO excited that I have this blog to share my passion with you! It may take me a little longer to create posts – have you ever tried typing with clay hands – but I look forward to talking furniture with you!
